Special Guest: Twannetta R. Weaver

1)  Share info about you, where you are from originally and where you are now, and what you do.

I am Twannetta R. Weaver, Founder of A Better You by Twannetta LLC a career coaching and business growth consulting firm. I am a Central Florida native who aspires to inspire growth in anyone who desires it, whether you are a business owner or a jobseeker.

2)  What have you overcome?  Share a little about your topic.

Defining moments of my life’s story surrounds my struggles to survive childhood trauma (including mental and sexual abuse) and corporate hurt (navigating toxic work environments). I’ve leaned on my ability to introspectively depend on my instincts, my faith in God and an unquenching thirst for knowledge to navigate the pain in exchange for solutions. I used the energy from these areas of my life to not only build resilience which led to an awakening in recognizing my talents in the strategic marketing space. I decided to use my extensive leadership experience to create a business designed to serve national nonprofits & entrepreneurs with content marketing needs, jobseekers with career coaching & mentorship and small businesses with growth tactics. In the midst of this shift, I also became certified in adult mental health first aid, achieved a degree in marketing, achieved executive certifications in women’s entrepreneurship, public relations and business strategy. I have a thriving business consulting firm.

3)  How did you know you needed to change?

While my story is extensive and will be covered in more depth in my book, one of the pivotal moments came around the time when the world was experiencing the impacts of the pandemic. I was drowning in frustration with how my then boss was treating me at work and the politics of being a black woman in a predominately caucasian leadership company which is an unfortunate but common circumstance among black women in corporate. I was in charge of a highly visible program which was the catalyst for internal politics and contention. As so many black women have felt in their careers, I too felt in my gut that I was being targeted because of my success and knew I needed to get away from that toxic environment. In the midst of a “pandemic restructuring” my role was subsequently eliminated. Before walking away, I strategically negotiated a severance package to account for all the years I poured into making my team, department and company successful. I used the severance to help me create the building blocks for my consulting business while also taking the time to lean into upskilling (I went back to college).

4)  What steps did you take to implement change?

I knew that I needed to be the change I wanted to see, and I figured if I can help just one person avoid corporate hurt then I would have done my job. I built a consulting business that helped career seekers land new and better jobs. My firm also supports law firms, mom and pop shops, nonprofits and new business startups to establish business processes, content marketing solutions and more to help business owners improve their bottom lines, grow their business, and job seekers maximize their careers all while establishing sound marketing tactics for brand awareness.

5)  What encouraging words can you leave for the readers.

Take it from me, it is never too late to change your life. You are the master of your story, and no one can control the narrative of your storyline but you. If you need new skills, just get them. You already have everything you need to be great - you just need to act on your instincts.

6)  What is your favorite quote?

The worst anyone could ever tell you is no.
